Mendel Schul was born on July 15, 1888 in the Lower Silesian town of Glogau (Polish: Glogów). The town belonged to the German Empire at the time, but Schul was probably of Polish descent. He was married to Berta Felder, who was born on July 14, 1900 in the Austrian-Hungarian town of Sanok. Both were of Jewish faith. They had two children: Adolf Pinkus (born 1924) and Regine (born 1926). Schul ran a trade in textiles, shoes and used materials at Wallstraße 54 (today Nordwall). After the business apparently ran into difficulties, the house, Im Kreise 2, was auctioned off and the family lived at Fritzenwiese 48F and from 1935 at St.-Georgs-Garten 1.
In October 1938, Mendel Schul, and possibly the whole family, was deported to the German-Polish border as part of the nationwide deportation of Polish Jews from Germany ("Polenaktion"). After the action was aborted due to the Polish state's refusal to accept him, he returned to Celle. The children managed to escape to England in 1939. Their son Adolf died as a British soldier in 1945, their daughter Regine eventually emigrated to Israel. Mendel and Berta Schul had to leave their home at the end of April 1939 because Jews were no longer allowed to live in "Aryan" homes. They were forcibly housed in the "Judenhaus", Im Kreise 24. Mendel Schul was arrested in November 1939. He died in the Buchenwald concentration camp on March 31, 1942. Berta Schul moved to Hanover in 1940. She was arrested in 1941 and deported to Riga. There is various information about the place where she died. In addition to the Stutthof concentration camp, Auschwitz is also mentioned.
