The roots of the R.J.Mayer shoe factory lay in the opening of a leather and country goods trade by Rafael Julius Mayer from Mönchsroth together with his sons Julius, David and Gustav Mayer. In 1895, the Rafael Julius Mayer shoe factory was established with the partners Gustav and David Mayer at Vordere Schmiedgasse 20 in Gmünd. Julius Mayer, born October 19, 1858, married Regina, née Lehmann, born June 20, 1866 in Wengheim. The couple had three daughters -  Erna, born April 28, 1898 in Mönchsroth -  Erna, born April 28, 1898 in Mönchsroth - Hermine, born October 8, 1899, married to Arnold Kahn, merchant from Zirndorf and  Selma, born February 19, 1902 - moved to Wengheim.February 1902 - emigrated to America in 1933.David Mayer was born on June 26, 1860 in Mönchsroth. David Mayer was married to Ida Hilb, born on August 26, 1867 in Baisingen (parents Josef Hilb and Fanny Hilb, née Kiefer). The couple had six children - Julius, born February 28, 1889 - died March 2, 1889 - Josef, born August 23, 1890, married to Beta, née Kahn of Heilbronn (remained in Schw. Gmünd and lived with his family in his own house,Höferlesbach 9 )- died June 13, 1930 -  Siegfried, born December 31, 1891, married in New York - Friedrich, born April 9, 1893, Leutnant,2/Bayr. Res.Inf.Reg.17,volunteered, wounded, killed in action in World War I on July 19, 1916, awarded the Iron Cross, the Württ.silver Military Service Medal and the Bavarian Military Cross of Merit III -  Erwin, b. November 22, 1895 - d. March 28, 1896 and Alfred, b. January 28, 1901 Gustav Mayer, b.31May 1867, was married to Emma Grünsfelder. The couple had four children - Selma, born 27 July 1896 in Gmünd, married to Ludwig Gottschalk, a merchant in Mannheim - Julius, born 23 July 1898 - died 13 December 1898 - Max, born 9 February 1900 - married in America - Rudolf Ferdinand, born 14 July 1907 - emigrated to the USA in 1936. In 1938 they were forced to sell their property as part of the Aryanization
