Grain handling - S. Guthmann (Max Guthmann)

Simon Guthmann von Hamm, born in 1836  was married to Emilie Heidweyer von Worms, born in 1839. He came to Worms in the middle of the 19th century and settled at Paulusstra e 3 as a malt manufacturer and grain merchant. Simon and Emilie Guthmann had four children - Bernhard, born on 1.9.1862 in Worms, - Rosa, - born on 7.5.1866 in Worms, Ludwig, born on 24.8.1871 in Worms  and Max, born on 11.5.1874 in Worms. Max Guthmann took over the former grain merchant's business and, together with his brother-in-law Siegmund Liebmann, traded in grain, malting barley, malt and animal feed imports from his house in Karmeliterstrasse 1. From 1920, they separated and Sigmund Liebmann ran his own grain and animal feed business at Karmeliterstra<e 4. Ludwig Guthmann took over the former malt factory and continued to run it.  Bernhard Guthmann ran an agency at Goethestra<e 8 until his death in 1914. His eldest son Ludwig, born on January 2, 1891, worked from 1927 to 1936 as an authorized signatory in the grain and animal feed business S.Guthmann. Rosa Guthmann married Siegmund Liebmann from Dirmstein on April 11, 1888, who ran the S. Guthmann grain and animal feed business together with Max Guthmann until 1920. Max and Else Guthmann tried in vain to emigrate to England, South Africa and the USA.  On October 3, 1941, they had to give up their apartment and house.  On September 27, 1942, Max and Else Guthmann were deported to Theresienstadt. Max Guthmann died there of poisoning on December 15, 1942. Else Guthmann, née Löwy, was transported on to Auschwitz on October 9, 1944 and murdered there.
