7. Dec. 2015Alfred Süskind was born in 1885 in Lingen and was for many years head of the Jüdische Gemeinde in Fürstenau. He was married to Sophie Süskind. On November 10, 1938, he was arrested and was imprisoned in the Buchenwald concentration camp. He succeeded in 1939 the escape to the USA, where he died on 20 September 1982.

SchwedenBernhard Süskind was born on October 6, 1921, the son of Alfred and Sophie Süskind in Fürstenau. In 1936 he began an apprenticeship as a locksmith in Hamburg. On November 10, 1938, he was arrested in Fürstenau and was imprisoned in the Buchenwald concentration camp. He managed to escape to Sweden and from there üvia Norway to the U.S. in 1939. In 1942 he joined the U.S. Army and thus returned to Germany. In April 1945, as a U.S. soldier in Fürstenau, he saw to it that the toppled gravestones in the Jewish cemetery were put back in place. In 2000, he was named an honorary citizen of Fürstenau.[2] Bernhard Süskind passed away in New York on November 26, 2018.
