Sandershäuser Straße 15-17
34123 Kassel
Germany
The origins of the company Manus Katzenstein go back to the year 1842, when an ironmonger who had moved to the area founded the business. The founder was Manus Katzenstein, who was born in Erdmannsrode around 1788. Over the years, the business developed into a respected metal and iron shop and was still located at 52 Wolfhager Straß. The increasing industrialization of Kassel at the turn of the century as well as the prospering business prompted the owner Moritz Katzenstein to give up the old company location in 1905 and to move it to Sanderhauml;user Straße 17. An existing rail siding on the property may have reinforced this decision. In 1923, the businessman Heinrich Röttger had general power of attorney in Manus Katzenstein AG. At that time, he lived at Sanderhäuser Straße 17. After Manus Katzenstein AG closed in 1925, Heinrich Röttger moved to the opposite side of the street and opened a scrap metal business under his name. The houses at Sanderhäuser Straße 15 and 17 remained in the possession of the Katzenstein family until 1927. Manus Moritz Katzenstein died on October 15, 1941 in Frankfurt am Main. His wife Fanny Katzenstein, née Bickhardt was deported from Frankfurt am Main to Theresienstadt on September 2, 1942 and died there on April 15, 1943.
