Herbert M. Gutmann was born in Dresden on October 15, 1879. His father was Eugen Gutmann, long-time chairman of Dresdner Bank. After studying economics, Herbert M. Gutmann joined Dresdner Bank. In 1910 he was elected to the bank's Board of Managing Directors. He was a co-founder, director and later also president of Deutsche Orient-Bank. In 1919, Herbert M. Gutmann acquired the estate of his uncle, the banker Dr. Ernst Heller, which he had already leased in 1913, and converted it into a luxurious villa in country house style, the "Herbertshof " (1919-1926). The architect was Reinhold Mohr (Bauhaus).Herbert M. Gutman was an important art collector. Sport and culture also played an important role. The Herbertshof had its own gymnasium with an adjoining tiled bath (1927), a tennis court, a boat dock on the Jungfernsee, and a bathhouse that was accessible through an underground tunnel (under Bertinistra&szlig). The Gutmann House - the Gutmann Salon was a meeting place for many high-ranking personalities from politics, business and art at the time - the dining room was extended on the occasion of the visit of the Swedish King Gustav V (1926). Crown Prince Wilhelm was a guest at lunch, King Fuád of Ägypt and King Faisal of Iraq made their rendezvous.

In 1931, as a result of the banking crisis, Herbert M. Gutmann was dismissed from the Supervisory Board of Dresdner Bank. When the National Socialists came to power, Herbert M. Gutmann was ousted from all other supervisory board positions due to his Jewish origins and decided to leave Germany after 1936 and emigrated. Herbert M. Gutmann died impoverished in England in 1942 after a short and serious illness.
