Pawła Włodkowica 5a
50-072 Wrocław
Poland
The building is located at ul. Pawła Włodkowica 7 – 9. It was built in the years 1827 to 1829 according to the plans of K. F. Langhans, a German architect of the Classicist period, as the first large Jewish house of prayer in Silesia. The building was erected at a time of progressive emancipation of the Jewish population in Prussia. The synagogue was rebuilt several times. Initially, it served as a place of worship for the liberal wing of Judaism, and later, from 1872 to 1943, for the conservative part of the Jewish community in Wroclaw. The synagogue survived the Nazi period as one of a few such buildings, because a fire endangered adjacent houses.
