Prinzenweg 19
53894 Kommern
Germany
"In the 19th century, the initially small Jewish community in Kommern grew steadily. The still preserved Kommerner jüdische cemetery on Prinzenweg was established before 1838/1840 and occupied until 1937. 61 tombstones are preserved here (Reuter 2007).
Nowadays
In the village there is no sign o.ä. to the cemetery. The cemetery, surrounded by hedges and with Bäumen is üfreely accessible via the entrance gate in Prinzenweg. At its entrance there is a board with comprehensive information about the place and its history. Currently, 60 graves can be counted (inspection on 04.09.2020).
The almost 1,900 square meters of space occupying gravesite is apparently in a good state of maintenance. Nevertheless, a heavy branch broken off by the drought in the summer of 2020 not only damaged a gravestone, but also the fence to a neighboring plot.
Memorial stone
On September 1, 1985, a memorial was inaugurated by the local community of Kommern in the context of a ceremony directly opposite the former burial ground on the other side of the Prinzenweg. It commemorates the life and work of the Kommern synagogue community, which existed from about 1710 until July 13, 1942. The inscription in capitals on the metal plaque of the memorial stone reads:
In memory / of our Jüdischen / Mitbürger – by / national socialist
Gewaltherrschaft / 1933-1945 expelled / and murdered"
