Gottlob Heß was born in Ellwangen on May 21, 1863. His father was the bookseller Moritz Heß, born on May 31, 1823, married to Karoline Weinmann, born on January 20, 1839, from Wallerstein. His grandfather was Isaak Heß, born in Lauchheim, who ran the prosperous book and antiquarian shop J. Heß in Ellwangen an der Jagst. He was the head of the Israelite community in Lauchheim from an early age and was a champion of equal rights for Jews in Baden Wurttemberg. Gottob Heß founded a book and art antiquarian shop in 1887, initially in Arcostraß, then from 1897 in Brienner Straß 9. In the years 1892-1897 Emil Hirsch was his partner. After his death in 1914, his widow and son Julius took over the business. Their specialty was 18th century French illustrated books, later English and French color engravings. In addition, they offered medieval manuscripts, incunabula, woodcut books of the 16th century and precious bindings in varia catalogs. With the seizure of power by the National Socialists, the repressive measures against Jewish businesses in Munich began. In 1936, Julius Heß also emigrated to Switzerland, where he opened the Heß Antiquarian Bookshop in Bern. The recipient of the letter was the Florentine Baron Giacomo Giorgio Levi, born in Florence on September 24, 1888. Died on January 13, 1969 at the age of 80.
