The roots of the Leipzig banking house H. C. Plaut lie in Nordhausen in 1815, when Herz Cusel Plaut founded the company H. C. Plaut. In the Nordhausen directory from 1834, the company is listed as a money exchange business. When Herz Cusel Plaut died in 1835, his wife Caroline, née Blach, continued the business. Gustav Plaut began an apprenticeship in the parental bank at the age of 14. Jakob Plaut (1817-1902) returned to his hometown Nordhausen after his apprenticeship at Bankhaus Becker & Co. and worked together with his brothers Moritz (1822–1910) and Gustav (1824-1908) in the parental banking business. In 1852, the brothers sold the company to Bankhaus Bach und Fränkel and founded a banking house in Leipzig. In 1874 Gustav Plaut withdrew from the banking business and handed over control to his business partner Sieskind Sieskind, whose descendants (son-in-law Georg Schreiber and son and son Jakob Sieskind) continued the business until the 1930s.
