Siechenstraße 100
96052 Bamberg
Germany
The first medieval cemetery was located in the lower Sandstrasse. He was created in the 14th century and cleared in the late 15th century. During reconstruction work on a house some years ago old gravestones, which were used as floor slabs, are said to have been found.
From 1556 to 1851, the Jews in Bamberg had no cemetery of their own. They had to bury their dead first in Zeckendorf, from the middle of the 17th century in Walsdorf.
In 1851 the present cemetery on Siechenstrasse was inaugurated, and in 1890 the Tahara House was added. The building was used as a factory warehouse and survived the war undamaged.
The cemetery is still used by the Jewish community today. It contains about 1100 gravestones. Numerous well-known people are buried here.
The gravestones are rather ornate and less traditional in design, in keeping with the early prevailing Jewish assimilation and emancipation in Bamberg.
