In the basement of the Nordstra;e 25 (previously: Judengasse 31, also: House „Der schwarze Bär“) was the Mikwe fünner. The moat of the medieval city defenses, in the course of which the street extends, was here überwwbt and a corresponding facility was established.
Mikwe (Hebräish מִקְוֶה or מקווה, from קוה„zusammenfließen“), German früher Judenbad, in Judaism refers to the immersion bath whose water serves to achieve ritual purity by immersion . The hygiene thereby achieved was a positive side effect in terms of health.
A mikvah must have seven steps leading down into the water and a minimum capacity of slightly more than 500 liters. The water must be „living water“. Therefore, in many places groundwater micwaot were built, usually located underground at the height of the local groundwaterlevel. In modern times, rainwater is often used as well.
