Judenstraße 18
38820 Halberstadt
Germany
On the basis of a private foundation of the Halberstadt merchant Hirsch Köslin (died 1795), the general Jewish school "Hascharath Zwi" was founded in May 1796. From March 1797 it was housed in Judenstraße 27 - the first Halberstadt school building including a teacher's apartment.
After reorganization of the school, a first class of girls was also established in January 1827. Space became scarce, and so in October 1827 the school was able to move into a second schoolhouse at Judenstraße 18, diagonally opposite.
In 1858, the "Hascharath Zwi" moved to the converted area of the Klaussynagoge at Rosenwinkel 18. While the first schoolhouse (Judenstraße 27) continued to be used until 1881, the Jewish community gave up the second location at Judenstraße 18 sold the house. From 1899 to 1941/42, the "Hascharat Zwi" finally found a new home in the new school building Westendorf 15.
Had the old half-timbered building on the Judenstraße largely survived the devastating air raid on Halberstadt on 8.4.1945, it was deliberately abandoned to decay in GDR times. In the course of the planned "Old Town Redevelopment", the city council had all the houses on the east side - including the former school building Judenstraße 18 and the "Berend-Lehmann-Palais" further south - systematically demolished around 1986. Today there are various open spaces, parking lots or private gardens.
