Isaak Herzfelder was born on May 31, 1836 in Obernbreit. He was married to Luise Herzfelder née Löwenbach (born March 21, 1849 in Munich). The couple had two daughters: Marie verh. Gump (b. 1871) and Ida verh. Moos (b. 1886). Isaak Herzfelder died on November 11, 1904 in Augsburg. His wife Luise succeeded him on January 14, 1905 in Augsburg. Both were buried in the Jewish cemetery (Haunstetter Strasse) in Augsburg.
Isaak Herzfelder was a lawyer by profession and settled in Augsburg in 1873. In the Augsburg address book of 1895, Isaak Herzfelder is listed as an advocate and lawyer at Bahnhofstraße 26 II. Isaak Herzfelder was also a gifted poet, writer and translator of works by Italian and French authors (Alfred de Musset, P.J. de Béranger). He made a name for himself as a Goethe researcher with his book "Goethe in der Schweiz" (Goethe in Switzerland) and was also co-founder and chairman of a Goethe association in Augsburg. Likewise, he was a co-founder of a popular education association around 1880. In an obituary on his death, the Augsburger Allgemeine honored him as one of the "intellectual luminaries of Augsburg."
