The origins of the pencil factory Leopold Illfelder & Söhne lie in 1856, when Daniel Berolzheimer and Leopold Illfelder already founded the pencil factory Berolzheimer & Illfelder. When Daniel Berolzheimer died in 1859, his son Heinrich Berolzheimer took over his share of the company. Together with Leopold Illfelder, a branch office (Berolzheimer, Illfelder & Co. or B. Illfelder & Co.) was founded in New York in 1861, later "Illfelder Importing Co" or "Eagle Pencil Co.". In 1882, Leopold Illfelder withdrew from the USA and Heinrich Berolzheimer continued to run the company alone under the name Eagle Pencil Co. Leopold Illfelder and his son Martin Illfelder took over the business in Fürth and continued to run it under the name "Leopold Illfelder & Co" from that time on. In 1936, the company was transferred to Hans C. Schwarz, the Berlin representative of the "Bleistiftfabrik Koh-I-Noor Hardmuth" from Budweis, who took over the Fürth branch in 1937 and continued it together with the VERA pencil factory as Koh-I-Noor Berlin GmbH. In 1954, production in Fürth was discontinued. In 1956, the bilka department store (now Woolworth) was built on this site.
