The origin of the company A. Gutmann & Co. goes back to the year 1840 in Jebenhausen. There, the master weavers Abraham Gutmann, his brother-in-law Simon Raff and his cousin Isak Raff founded a hand weaving mill, which existed in Jebenhausen until 1861, when it was moved to Göppingen. With the relocation of the company to Göppingen, all three company owners also moved their residence to Göppingen. However, the company owners separated in the same year. Simon and Isak Raff separated, resuming their old parent company "Raff & Söhne", while Abraham Gutmann continued the company as sole owner until 1865. In the same year, his son Jakob and in 1872 son Leopold joined the company as partners. In 1881, Abraham Gutmann left the company. Jakob Gutmann was active in the company until the end of his life in 1913. In the meantime, his sons Max (1898), Sigmund (1900) and Ernst (1908) had joined the company. When Leopold Gutmann left the company in 1903, his son Robert Gutmann joined the company. In the years 1888-1896, Heinrich Frankfurter, who moved from Stuttgart to Göppingen, son-in-law of Abraham Gutmann was also a partner in the company. In 1923 the company became a limited liability company with the previous owners as directors. In 1905 the company acquired the weaving mill B. Baruch & Söhne in Hechingen with 500 looms, 300 workers and 30 employees. In 1917, the "Mechanische Leinen-Spinnerei und - Weberei Memmingen" was additionally acquired with 70 looms, 300 spindles, 180 workers and 20 employees.
