Jewish rest home Lehnitz

The Landhaus Lehnitz is a symbol of Jewish life, faith, resistance, self-contemplation of one's own culture and identity, lived care for community members, and therefore of a Jewish community that responds to and shapes the world in which it lives. It is the result of a transformation from a Jewish convalescent home for working women and adolescent girls to a Jewish convalescent home in the midst of National Socialist terror.In 1896 the administrations of the Jewish hospitals and the Poor Commission from the Jewish community of Berlin came together. A committee was appointed to establish a Jewish convalescent home to enable women and girls to convalesce under medical care in the countryside. On the board of this committee was the couple Rosa and Louis Sachs, who in 1899 founded the Jewish convalescent home Lehnitz, which was supported and financed by an association specially registered by the Sachs couple. The demographic development of the Jewish community (aging, emigration, high proportion of women) until the 1920s made it necessary for the Jewish community through its welfare office to become the second sponsor until the deprived takeover in 1929. In 1933 Frieda Glücksmann took over the management of the now called "Jewish convalescent home Lehnitz". Her new concept, in which the house functioned as a recreation home, a day care center for children, a home economics school and a meeting place, enabled her to hold the site until 1938, by which time many other sites of this kind had already been razed by the Nazis. In 1935 they even built a synagogue in the basement of the building, which was quite surprising considering the year. On November 9, 1938, on the evening of the Reichsprogromnacht, the day care center was closed by the Nazis and from then on continued to operate as the Oranienburg Hospital. Nowadays private condominiums can be found in this building again, under the management of a Jewish organization.
