Hermann Hirschberg's home and place of work

  • Hermann (Hirsch) Hirschberg was born in Schwetz on March 20, 1822. A circumcision certificate issued by the Jewish community of Schwetz in 1848 states that he was circumcised in the synagogue after his birth in accordance with the "Mosaic Law."  He became a master furrier like his father Lipman Hirschberg. A certificate issued in Neuchâtel in 1850 confirms that he passed the master's examination.
  • .
  • He married Ernestine Levy in the first marriage and after her death Sara Rosenthal in the second marriage. The second marriage was in 1881.
  • Hermann (Hirsch) Hirschberg was very active in the Jewish community of Schwetz. He officiated as a mohel. A certificate, dated August 18, 1858, proves his qualification as a circumciser according to Jewish rite. In a mohel book he meticulously documented the 693 circumcisions he performed in the years 1858-1905 (http://objekte.jmberlin.de/object/jmb-obj-103452). In addition, he was active in the Jewish Sick and Funeral Society for 25 years, as evidenced by an ornamental certificate from 1901. As a board member of the Jewish Congregation, he helped to equip the local synagogue with electric lights.
  • He began his military service in 1844 and received honors as a "loyal to the king" soldier during the revolutionary years.
  • In 1852, he was granted municipal citizenship of the city of Schwetz by the magistrate. He was later a member of the City Council for many years.
