In 1627, a cemetery was established in Kriegshaber, which is now located at the corner of Madison and Hoover Streets in the former U.S. residential area of Center Village. Only for a part of the cemetery there are records of who is buried there. The cemetery has always been controversial. Residents of Augsburg's suburbs had the jus pascendi' the right of floral visitation there. So between the graves the cattle grazed. In order not to cause the "decrease" of this right, the cemetery was also not allowed to be enlarged. Because of overcrowding, a dead person had to be buried under the door. Since there were already grave desecrations and the corpses were dug up and robbed, it was decided in 1722 to build a guard's house and to install a Christian guard. The Burgau chief office had given its approval, but the town refused, because "in case of illness of the Christian guard, the valuable goods (of the anointing of the sick) would have to be carried there, and because the guard's house would give shelter to all kinds of wandering beggars". The house was almost finished when a squad of city soldiers appeared and demolished it. However, the emperor intervened, the city had to pay 150 000 fl. fine (to the emperor) and rebuild the cottage.
