Kühlungsborner Straße 52
18246 Bützow
Germany
Already in 1740 the first burial took place on the newly created cemetery, this had to be expanded in 1821. 1880 could be acquired the initially leased land by the municipality for sale.
.Around 1825, the number of community members reached its peak of almost 140. As a result of the emigration that also began here, it declined to eight by 1910, the synagogue building was sold in 1921, and the following year the community dissolved. The last two Jews from Bützow were deported in 1942.
The after 1933 originally planned levelling of the cemetery was omitted, but during the war some of the gravestones were misused for the construction of tank traps etc. . By order of the Soviet city commander, NSDAP members had to repair the damage done and restore the cemetery.
In 1952, the Jewish provincial community sold the unoccupied part of the cemetery to the Protestant church.
The Jewish cemetery is located within the general cemetery and is separated from it by a lattice fence. From the cemetery entrance on Kühlungsborner Straße (diagonally opposite the correctional facility), follow the main path until just before the old cemetery chapel, and there turn left. The path leads over a hill to a side entrance of the cemetery. To the left is the well-kept Jewish cemetery with about 60-70 gravestones and a memorial stone near the fence.
