„There was this elephant in the room that nobody ever talked about“ (“There was this elephant in the room that nobody ever talked about.), Martin Goldschmidt – son of Günther Goldschmidt and author of the book „Die unausl;schliche Symphonie“ – metaphorically describes the guilt his parents felt as ¨survivors toward the victims of National Socialism.
In 1919, Alex Goldschmidt bought the house at Gartenstra;e 34, where Günther lived with his parents and brother Helmut. Günther played music there until late at night and soon played in the high school orchestra. The family home was sold to Minister Spangemacher under orders from the National Socialists in 1932.
On November 14, 1938, shortly after the November pogrom, Helmut Goldschmidt was dismissed from Oldenburg's secondary school at the age of 17, two years before his graduation.
Günther's brother and father were deported in 1942 and murdered in Auschwitz. Today there is a memorial next to the auditorium of the Old Grammar School. Furthermore, a commemorative plaque on the facade of the Goldschmidt family home is intended to commemorate the fate of Alexander Goldschmidt, his son Helmut, his wife Toni, and his daughter Eva.
