On 06.08.1992 the Jewish Community of Oldenburg was re-established. The community caused a sensation because gender equality was put in the foreground: During the founding meeting, 18 participants* were present, both male and female, reflecting the community's desire for gender equality.
From 1992 to 1995, State Rabbi Henry G. Brandt was in charge of the congregation s affairs. From 1995 to 2004, Bea Wyler became the first woman to serve as rabbi in the community after the Shoa in Germany. From 2006 to 2008 she was followed by Rabbi Daniel Alter. Since November 2010, Rabbi Alina Treiger has officiated at the Oldenburg Jewish Community. The term of office of the founding president Sara-Ruth Schumann lasted from 1992 to 2012; during this time the congregation grew to over 300 members. This was achieved mainly through the integration of Jewish immigrants from the countries of the former Soviet Union, who have enriched community life in the long term.
The community today is a place of learning and gathering. It places great emphasis on youth work. For example, Rabbi Treiger founded a Sunday school for children, teaching Jewish religion and culture and the Hebrew language. In addition, the young people from the youth center have participated several times in Jewrovision, the largest Jewish singing and dancing competition in Europe.
All those who come to the community should feel at home and have the opportunity to celebrate the important events of Jewish life. All Jewish holidays are part of the congregation's regular program and are celebrated with great participation of the members. In addition, classes are offered in preparation for the bat mitzvah and bar mitzvah. In addition, there is cooperation with the city of Oldenburg, the Society for Christian-Jewish Cooperation, the Intercultural Jewish Studies of the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, as well as all communities of the State Association of Jewish Communities of Lower Saxony.
