Samuel Lazarus was born on 13.10.1887 in Stapelmoor (East Frisia). He had two brothers, Paul and Simon Lazarus, who, like him, learned the profession of farmer in the family business and at the same time were active in the Oldenburg livestock trade. In May 1922 he married Gerta Jakobs from Oldenburg. They had three children: Jan, Ilse and the early deceased Klaus.
In 1914 Samuel Lazarus joined the 19th Dragoon Regiment in Oldenburg as a war volunteer and fought as a front-line soldier in World War I. He was wounded in 1917. In 1917 he was wounded and returned to Oldenburg, where he remained a member of the Oldenburg Dragoon Association. After the end of the war he built up an existence as a cattle dealer.
With the beginning of the Judenboykotts he also suffered financial losses. On September 30, 1938, his trading license was finally revoked and he had to close his business. After his arrest on Pogrom Night, he was released from the Oldenburg court prison on November 11. Shortly thereafter he went to Hamburg with his wife Gerta and daughter Ilse. His son Jan Lazarus came to England in 1938 with one of the Kindertransports and üsurvived the war as a British soldier. Samuel Lazarus was able to delay the deportation of his family for some time. But on June 23, 1943, the Lazarus family was also deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp. Samuel survived there until the liberation by the Allies. His wife and daughter were taken to Ausschwitz and murdered there.
