The Jewish community "Adass Yisroel zu Berlin" was founded in 1869 in Berlin as a counter-movement to the reform-oriented Jewish Community of Berlin. The tradition-conscious community received official recognition from detuschen Kaiser and King of Prussia in 1885 as a religious community with equal rights to the Jewish Community of Berlin. Since 1940, the center of the community has been located at Tucholskystraße 40 in Berlin-Mitte (formerly Artilleriestraße 31). The community hall as well as synagogue and other facilities of the community are located there. The kosher café-restaurant "Beth Cafe" and the "Kolbo", a store for kosher food and Judaica is also located in Tucholskystraße.
During the Nazi era, both Jewish communities in Berlin and their institutions were destroyed and plundered. It was not until the mid-1980s that Adass Yisroel could be re-established with financial help from the state as well as from fellow citizens of the divided city of Berlin. In 1997, the community officially became a religious body again.
The congregation's activities include not only synagogue services, but also Hebrew classes, religious education, public lectures and lectures on Jewish religion, tradition and culture. The congregation has an archive, a library and a children's club "Mo'adonit".
