Siegmund Stöckel was born as Samuel Nuchem Steckel on August 27, 1868 in Czortkow/Tarnopol. His parents were the merchant Isaac Stöckel and his wife Fradel, née Stöckel. He had another brother Moritz Moses and 2 sisters: Sara and Dwora. Siegmund and Moritz became master builders and went to Berlin to participate in the boom. Siegmund married Elise Hollaender on March 19, 1903, and their dowry became the seed money for a successful construction business. He and his brother Moritz bought up small country houses in up-and-coming Friedenau, had them demolished, and built the stately tenement houses that still stand there today. He himself, however, preferred to live with Elise in a small country house at Fregestraße 71. On October 28, 1938, he and his nephew Max Blank were deported to Poland, presumably Bentschen (Zbaszyn), as part of the Polish Action. They reached Warsaw, where they were hidden by a Jewish tailor. On January 10, 1939, Siegmund Stöckel died of pneumonia.
