Hedwig Sass, née Cohn, was born on 19.4.1879 in Stolzenhagen, district Barnim, as daughter of the meat merchant Moritz Cohn and his wife Therese, née Cohn. In 1906 she married the dentist Rachmiel Urech, born 26.3.1866 in Lemberg, with whom she lived in Magdeburg. In 1907 Rachmiel Urech changed his name to Richard Sass. He died in Magdeburg in 1926. Hedwig Sass moved to Berlin with her daughter Margarete. Until 1938 she had her own apartment there at Speyrer Str.3, after which she moved in with her sister, Martha Baum and her husband Wolf Felix Baum at Meraner Str. 8. The daughter was able to emigrate to Chile in 1939. In the fall of 1941, the Baum couple and Hedwig Sass were expelled from their apartment and forcibly quartered at Nymphenburger Str.4 with the last Jewish tenant of the house, Pauline Borchardt. On January 19, 1942, they were deported to Riga and, if they survived the transport in the unheated freight car at minus 30 to 40 degrees, presumably murdered immediately after arrival.
