Guttmann, Bernhard

Bernhard Guttmann was born in Breslau on July 9, 1863 to Jewish parents. Since 1928 Bernhard Guttmann lived at Wielandstr. 27 II. He was a merchant. Presumably the widow Lisbeth Michalowitz, née Guttmann, born on November 18, 1869 in Breslau, was his sister. She lived at Wilhelmshöherstraße 25 from 1938 until her deportation to Theresienstadt on September 22, 1942. Josef Schmeidler, presumably a relative, supported Bernhard Guttmann and Lisbeth Michalowitz with regular monthly payments. When Josef Schmeidler was finally able to leave for England, his accounts were frozen, so that the payments to Bernhard Guttmann and Lisbeth Michalowitz stopped. Bernhard Guttmann pointed out to the Gestapo that he was in his 78th year and that if he did not receive the monthly support of 25 marks, which was his only income besides 11 marks from the welfare office, he would not be able to pay the rent and he would be on the street. There was no answer from the Gestapo, and it was not until September 1943 that the Property Realization Office noted that the Jews had no longer reported and that they had presumably already been deported. Bernhard Guttmann last lived in the Jewish Old People's Home I at Große Hamburger Straße 26, from where he was deported to Theresienstadt on June 4, 1942. His name was already on the list of transports for September 19, 1942 to Treblinka, when Bernhard Guttmann died while still in Theresienstadt on September 18, 1942. The diagnosis was enteritis, intestinal catarrh.
