Paul Ludwig Edel was born in Hanover on November 12, 1874, the son of the physician Dr. Emil Edel and his wife Herta (Bertha) née Süssmann. His siblings were Henry (1858), Elsa (1866), Gertrude (1867), and Margarete (1877). The family had left the Jewish community and adopted the Protestant faith. Paul Ludwig Edel studied medicine in Munich and received his doctorate with a thesis "On Scleroderma." In 1900 he worked as a ship's doctor for the Hamburg-America Line, after which he took part as a doctor on a steamer in the campaign to suppress the Boxer Rebellion in China. In 1903 he settled in Berlin as a gynecologist, and in 1909 he married Alice Steinthal, a Protestant who had also left the Jewish community. Since their marriage, the couple lived at Heilbronner Straße 19; they had no children. Paul Ludwig Edel took part in the First World War, was wounded and received several awards. After 20 years of medical practice, he received the title Sanitätsrat. His wife Alice was depressed and shot herself in 1926 with her husband's old army pistol.
