Paul Ludwig Edel was born in Hanover on November 12, 1874, the son of the physician Dr. Emil Edel and his wife Herta (Bertha) née Süssmann. His siblings were Henry (1858), Elsa (1866), Gertrude (1867), and Margarete (1877). The family had left the Jewish community and adopted the Protestant faith. Paul Ludwig Edel studied medicine in Munich and received his doctorate with a thesis "On Scleroderma." In 1900 he worked as a ship's doctor for the Hamburg-America Line, after which he took part as a doctor on a steamer in the campaign to suppress the Boxer Rebellion in China.
