The central Hessian university city of Giessen in the district of the same name is the seventh largest city in Hesse with a population of about 86,000 and one of the seven special state cities of the state. As the seat of a government district and the county, it is the administrative center of Central Hesse, an important transportation hub and one of the region's major centers.
