The central Hessian university city of Giessen in the district of the same name is the seventh largest city in Hesse with a population of about 86,000 and one of the seven special state cities of the state. As the seat of a government district and the county, it is the administrative center of Central Hesse, an important transportation hub and one of the region's major centers. Together with Wetzlar in the Lahn-Dill district, which is located ten kilometers to the west, the city forms an agglomeration area with a population of about 200,000; the surrounding region has a population of about 320,000. Further away are the cities of Marburg (Marburg-Biedenkopf district) up the River Lahn, Fulda (Fulda district) on the other side of the Vogelsberg, Siegen (Siegen-Wittgenstein district) in South Westphalia, Friedberg (Hesse) and Bad Nauheim in the Wetterau district, and Limburg an der Lahn (Limburg-Weilburg district) on the edge of the Westerwald.
.The city is home to the Justus Liebig University, several sections of the Technical University of Central Hesse,[2] an administrative and business academy, the Free Theological University of Giessen and a department of the Hessian University of Police and Administration, as well as the Hessian Initial Reception Center for Refugees.
