Between the Middle Ages and the 20th century, three Jewish cemeteries were established in Trier. From the medieval cemetery only a few gravestones are preserved. Between 1620 and 1650, the Jewish cemetery was established in the Weidegasse. It is located in Trier-South in the street corner between Gilbertstraße and Weidegasse. More than 500 gravestones have been preserved; among the most important are those of Mordechai Halevi ben Schmuel Postelberg (died October 24, 1804) and Abraham Mosche ben Heschel Lwow (died 1788), the grandfather and great-grandfather of Karl Marx.

After the cemetery in neighboring Gries was almost full, the Jewish community applied in 1820 to build a cemetery on a plot of land already acquired in Steinbach. In 1826 the cemetery could be opened. The information board at the cemetery itself mentions 1810 as the date of establishment.

The Jewish cemetery, on the property Kirchhohl 2, is a protected cultural monument. Curiously, there is a single-family house on the property of the cemetery, which was built after 1945. The entrance gate to the property is open and the two parts of the cemetery are separated from the rest of the property by a hedge.
