Erbsengasse 26
65795 Hattersheim
Germany
A prayer room was already present in the 18th century. Also the Jewish families living in Okriftel and Hofheim came to the services in Hattersheim. In 1788 it is reported that already for 80 years joint services were held the Hofheimer and Hattersheimer Jews in Hattersheim. In this year the Hofheimer wanted to make themselves independent and establish their own prayer room.
About the further history Arnsberg Vol. I p. 339 summarizes: "The old synagogue was according to the statement of the Amtsvogts in Hattersheim in an old cottage and miserable corner with a Judenwitwe. In the fire cadastre of 1841, the synagogue building in Hattersheim is described as a one-story half-timbered building (18 by 9 feet), in good condition. In 1843 it is said that the Judenschule was a one-story building covered with tiles. The land had been donated to the community by Abraham Oppenheimer. In 1909 the synagogue was still located in the courtyard of David Oppenheimer in Erbsengasse.
After 1933: Services were still held in the prayer room in Erbsengasse until the emigration of the Oppenheimer family (Oppenheimer's apartment there as well).
In connection with the 50th service anniversary of the teacher E. Mannheimer, who was responsible for Hattersheim, Okriftel and Hofheim in 1900, it is reported about the inauguration of a new Torah scroll. It will probably have been a new Torah scroll for the prayer room in Hattersheim (see page on Okriftel).
The prayer room of the Jewish community was used until after 1933. After the emigration of the Oppenheimer family, no more services could be held.
