Gutenbrunnenstraße 1
67806 Rockenhausen
Germany
At the end of the 17th century, the still few Rockenhausen Jews attended the synagogue in Alsenz. In the course of the 18th century, a prayer room may have been established in Rockenhausen. In 1811 Manasse Kahnweiler set up a prayer room on the upper floor of an outbuilding of his house at Luitpoldstr. 20 (formerly building No. 250 in the "Grad Gaß"), which was solemnly inaugurated. In the 1860s the desire to build a synagogue in Rockenhausen arose. The first plans were drawn up in 1867/68 by the district building officer Rosenthal. It was to be a two-story building with a synagogue, a schoolroom and a teacher's apartment. But the construction could not be realized for financial reasons.
It was not until 1885 that the house Gutenbrunnenstraße 1, built around 1874, could be acquired and converted into a synagogue with a schoolroom and a teacher's apartment. The prayer room was located next to the classroom, the teacher's apartment in the attic. On August 13, 1885 the building was solemnly inaugurated: a procession moved from the old prayer hall to the new one. The prayer hall of the new synagogue had 60 seats for men, 35 for women.
In the November pogrom of 1938 the interior of the synagogue was destroyed. The building was then misused as an air raid shelter. In May 1940 it came into the possession of the city, in August 1941 into the possession of the district. The district office used it (after a reassignment in 1949 to the Jewish Religious Community of the Rhine Palatinate) until the early 1970s. In September 1975 the former synagogue came into the possession of the city, which had it demolished in 1976 (Alfred Hans Kuby, 1989 gives this date, whereas Zacharias, 1988 gives the year 1977) . A notice board is attached. The Chanukkaleuchter from the synagogue is in the local museum of the city.
.Today the property is covered by a parking lot.
