Herrngasse 21
91541 Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Germany
A first prayer hall was established in the year of the establishment of the congregation and was inaugurated on the eve of New Year's Day (Erev Rosh Hashanah) 5636 (= September 29, 1875). Already this first prayer hall was "well furnished" according to the above report of April 1876.
In 1888, the Jewish Community acquired the house Herrnmarkt No. 40 (today Herrngasse 21/corner Heringsbronnengässchen), built in the 17th century, and converted it into a community center: on the first floor, the prayer hall was established; on the second floor, there was the teacher's apartment and a classroom for giving religious instruction.
The history of the synagogue as a Jewish place of worship ended as early as October 1938: on October 22, 1938, the last Jewish residents were rounded up in the synagogue before their expulsion from Rothenburg. They were ordered to leave the town immediately. The synagogue building was bought by a citizen of the town and converted into a private house. The building is preserved to this day.
In November 2008, a signboard was installed.
