Initially, there was a prayer room in one of the Jewish houses, presumably already in the building owned by Jews (Samuel Katz) since 1812, in which the synagogue was established around 1854 (this building is listed in the fire cadastre as "Schulhaus").

Around 1854, the mentioned building was expanded into a two-story synagogue with the prayer hall with women's gallery. The synagogue building was a rear house set back from the street with a long and narrow courtyard in front of it, bordered by residential houses from both long sides. The synagogue building was a square half-timbered building with a hipped roof. Two entrances, one from the courtyard, the other on the left outer wall, led into the building.

After the emigration of most Jewish families from Steinbach, services could no longer be held in the synagogue since about 1910. The synagogue building came into private ownership of Gottschalk Löwenberg's daughter Johanna in 1919 and was subsequently used as a carpenter's workshop. After 1945, the building was converted into a residential house and is preserved as such.
