Initially there was a prayer hall, later probably an older synagogue, which is first mentioned as "Judenschule" for the first time in 1802 in the fire cadastre of the community. This old synagogue stood on the site of the new synagogue of 1891 and was demolished in a dilapidated condition in 1889.

The prayer room of the new synagogue had 64 seats for men and 36 seats in a gallery for women. The building was located in the town center directly on Kreuzstraße. The building was a two-story, plastered solid structure with the shield gable crowned by commandment tablet and the entrance area on the street (from the west). Presumably, the room of the religious school and other rooms of the congregation were also located in the synagogue building.

Eight years after the consecration of the synagogue, a great event was about to take place in November 1899: the bringing in of a new Torah scroll, donated by the "Jünglings-Verein", which had existed since 1849.

For more than four decades, the synagogue in Gross-Zimmern was the center of Jewish community life. How long services were held in the synagogue is not known. In the 1930s, the number of community members declined sharply due to departure and emigration, so that during this period (already in 1933?) the synagogue was closed.

In the November pogrom of 1938, the interior of the synagogue was destroyed; the building was initially preserved. In 1939, a furniture company bought the former synagogue for 13,000 RM. To whom the amount was paid at that time is not known. From now on, the former synagogue was a furniture warehouse.

In 1971, the building was demolished in connection with the "local redevelopment". In its place was built a modern multipurpose hall, adjacent to the community center.
