Germany
Today's memorial synagogue Baisingen represents an important place of Jewish culture in the district of Rottenburg am Neckar. The synagogue was built in 1748 and gave the Jewish population in Baisingen the opportunity to pursue their religious daily life. After the synagogue was destroyed by the National Socialists in 1939, it was used as a barn. The special features of the synagogue in Baisingen, which is a listed building, are that during restoration care was taken not only to restore the synagogue to its original condition, but also to preserve „all important traces of its history” . The city of Rottenburg am Neckar finally acquired the former synagogue in 1989, and the women's gallery, which is still in good condition, is on display in the permanent exhibition. The history of Jewish life in the region is presented here on the basis of artefacts. The Friends of the Baisingen Synagogue see their task in the preservation of the synagogue and intend to constantly develop the memorial site Baisingen Synagogue as a place of learning.
