Already at the beginning of the 19th century a prayer room may have been established. Around 1840 a synagogue was built, which was the worship center of the community until its destruction during the November pogrom in 1938. The synagogue had two high round-arched windows on the street side. On the left side - seen from the street - was the synagogue courtyard, from which a small staircase led into the building.
On the afternoon of November 10, 1938 (between 4 and 5 p.m.) the synagogue was set on fire mainly by out-of-town SA people. The local fire department was present to protect the neighboring buildings. The ruin was removed a short time later, only the cellar, which was about 1 m above ground level, remained standing. The cellar ceiling was used in the Nazi era as a podium for parties and events of the NSDAP.
On August 30 2015 a part of the newly designed village center (Freier Platz) in Hahnheim was inaugurated as Synagogue Square . In the process, an illuminated Star of David was incorporated into the paving.
