Komturstraße 21
32052 Herford
Germany
The construction of the synagogue in Komturstraße took place only in 1851/52, before that a private house served the Jewish community as a religious center, but over time it had become too small for the growing community. The synagogue was built in North German style with red bricks. Forty years later, the synagogue was rebuilt and consecrated, and a school and community hall were also built alongside it.
Already in 1934, the synagogue in Herford was the victim of an arson attack, in the pogrom night of November 1938, the synagogue, like many other synagogues in Germany, was set on fire and destroyed by people. The community hall was preserved. After the war the Jewish inhabitants of the village founded a new Jewish community, which at the end of the 90's got a strong growth by immigrants from the Soviet Union. A new synagogue was consecrated on the site of the original synagogue on March 14, 2010. A memorial in memory of the destroyed synagogue is also located in Komturstraße with the inscription: "Here stood the synagogue of the Jewish religious community of Herford. It was destroyed on November 9."
