Annaturmstraße 16
53879 Euskirchen
Germany
The synagogue in the Annaturmstraße in Euskirchen was inaugurated in 1856. The Jewish community had held its services in private houses before the synagogue was built.
In 1886, a large city fire destroyed the synagogue, after which the community had a new synagogue built on the same property. The new synagogue was somewhat more elaborate and magnificent in style. In addition, the synagogue had 200 more seats available for the growing congregation. The building had a touch of oriental style, its dome was 30 meters high and its street front flanked by two towers with spherical roofs.
The inauguration of the new building took place a year later and was performed by Rabbi Dr. Abraham Frank of Cologne. The services in the synagogue were held according to the Orthodox rite.
.
On November 10, 1938, the synagogue was first vandalized and then set on fire by SA men. The synagogue burned down and the ruins were not removed until two years later, in 1940. The site of the former synagogue location is now a memorial with greenery. A memorial stele has stood there since 1981 in memory of the murdered Jews of Euskirchen.
