Schloßstraße 15
59821 Arnsberg
Germany
The first evidence of a settlement of Jews in Arnsberg dates from 1600. 71 years later, the city no longer tolerated Jewish settlement on municipal territory, which is why the Jews were expelled from Arnsberg.
Only in 1810 Jews returned to the city and settled. The Jewish Arnsberg community was able to build a synagogue in 1852 and inaugurated it in 1853. On November 9, 1938, the synagogue in Schlossstraße was desecrated by SA and SS squads, the interior was completely smashed and objects of worship were thrown into the street. The building was set on fire. However, the fire was quickly extinguished after protests from residents who lived in the immediate neighborhood and feared for their homes.
The building was rebuilt during the Nazi period.
After World War II in 1945, the former synagogue was sold by the Jewish Trust Corportation and converted for residential use. A plaque across the street commemorates the history of the synagogue.
