56567 Neuwied
Germany
The Jewish community Neuwied maintained at the latest since the 17th century (probably 1629) a cemetery in today's Neuwied district Niederbieber. He was also used by the Jewish communities in the wider area as a burial ground.
.The oldest gravestone that can be dated with certainty is from 1706. The cemetery was occupied until 1942. The cemetery area covers 111.94 (or 110.37) acres. A cemetery hall was present since 1908. It was severely damaged in the 1938 pogrom night; the ruin was demolished in 1947.
The cemetery grounds are now administered by the Jewish Cultural Community of Koblenz. In more recent times, the grounds were enclosed by a sturdy iron fence. An orientation board is located at the main entrance. The gate is open to any visitor during the day - the entrance is on Kurt-Schumacher-Strasse.
The cemetery has been a listed building since February 1985. It was restored in the 1980s at the effort of the German-Israeli Friendship Circle in Neuwied. The Niederbieber cemetery is one of the largest Jewish cemeteries in Rhineland-Palatinate. There are 661 gravestones for 770 deceased preserved. At 294 graves no gravestone is left.
