Between the Middle Ages and the 20th century, three Jewish cemeteries were established in Trier. From the medieval cemetery only a few gravestones are preserved. Between 1620 and 1650, the Jewish cemetery was established in the Weidegasse. It is located in Trier-South in the street corner between Gilbertstraße and Weidegasse. More than 500 gravestones have been preserved; among the most important are those of Mordechai Halevi ben Schmuel Postelberg (died October 24, 1804) and Abraham Mosche ben Heschel Lwow (died 1788), the grandfather and great-grandfather of Karl Marx. After the cemetery could not be expanded, it was closed in 1922. Since that year, the Jewish community has used a section in Trier's main cemetery.
