Seibersbach

"The small Jewish community in the village of Seibersbach probably arose in the second half of the 18th century. Towards the end of the 19th century the Jewish community reached its numerical peak with about 70 people. There had been a synagogue in the village since the 1850s; before that, the Jews of Seibersbach had attended the Jewish house of worship in nearby Schweppenhausen. After a fire in 1913, which completely destroyed the synagogue, a new building was erected on the old foundations.

From the mid-1920s, Jews from Dörrebach and Schweppenhausen also sought out the local synagogue. A separate burial ground north of the village "Am Eichenhang" was available since the 18th century. The cemetery used until about 1940 still has almost 50 graves on an area of about 1,000 m².

Since the turn of the century, the number of community members was declining; nevertheless, the synagogue was used until the November days of 1938, before it was destroyed by SA members. After demolishing the interior and tearing out the floor, the perpetrators burned religious writings on the forecourt. The synagogue building was forcibly transferred into private hands a few days later. The few Jewish residents still living in Seibersbach were deported in July 1942.

After 1945, the vacant synagogue building was first used as a gymnasium, later taken over by a family of innkeepers and converted into a dance hall. Extensive structural extensions then led to significant changes in appearance. Another building use was subsequently by a bakery business. Today, the house is again in private use."
