Essen is a large city in the Ruhr area. It is one of the largest cities in Germany. The city was founded in the 9th century.

Jews can be traced for the first time in the late 13th century in the city. Already in the 17th century they had a synagogue, which was replaced, however, for lack of space in 1808 by the synagogue in Weberstrasse. But even this synagogue was soon too small and was replaced by the large building opposite the Essen Münster. This synagogue is still standing, but the services are held today in a smaller building in the Sedanstrasse.

In the districts of Essen still existed individual small synagogues, Mikwen and Schulhäuser. They are not preserved.

Today, a larger Jewish community exists again in the city.
