Where Marktplatz and Schustergasse (former Judengasse) are today, the center of Jewish life in Würzburg was located in the 12th century. The medieval synagogue was probably built in 1147 and first mentioned in 1170. Its history ended violently during the persecution of Jews during the plague in 1349, when the building was destroyed and the first St. Mary's Chapel was built on its site. The current church building dates back to 1377 and is the second chapel. In 1945, this building was completely destroyed by the war and rebuilt. Nothing remains of the medieval synagogue; only a fragment of wall discovered in 2007 can still be linked to the former building.
