The High Synagogue is located in a late Renaissance brick building on a rectangular floor plan. It was most likely built between 1556 and 1563. According to one hypothesis, the synagogue was built by Sephardic Jews following the example of the synagogues built in the Venetian ghetto. Another version states that the wealthy merchant Izrael obtained permission from King Sigismund II Augustus to build a synagogue in the second half of the 16th century. August for permission to build a synagogue and allegedly received it. It is known that the synagogue appears in documents from 1597 as „New“.
