Hirsch Goldstein ran a private „Israelitisches Unterrichts-Institut“ in his house (plan no. 161, today Poppenlauerer Straße 9), where Christian and Jewish boys from the age of 11 were taught foreign languages and commercial subjects, among other things. After Goldstein moved away, the religious community acquired the building in 1895 and set up its Israelite elementary school there. The old school building was sold.
The following teachers are known by name: Hirsch Goldstein (presumably from 1873 to 1895), Moses Nußbaum (from 1895 to– 1910) and Siegfried Freudenberger (from 1910 until the time of the First World War). The last Jewish teacher was David Cegla until 1935.
In the first decades of the 20th century, the Jewish community continued to shrink and by 1925 there were only 33 members. As the community's income fell sharply along with the number of members, it became increasingly difficult to finance the necessary building projects and repairs. The purchase of the new school building in 1895 had also resulted in a large debt burden. In 1902, a new ritual bath had to be built on the site of the school building (house no. 161).
The Jewish community received state subsidies for the restoration of the school building in 1910/12. At this time, 19 children were still attending elementary and religious instruction. Within the next ten years, however, the number of pupils fell drastically, so that the Israelite elementary school had to be closed in 1920. Together with the Poppenlauer community, only one religious teacher was employed, who also worked as a chasan and shochet. In future, the school-age Jewish children were taught in the elementary school at the Protestant elementary and secondary school in Maesselbach. In 1926, the VBIG offered a subsidy for the repair of the community center.
