The Gymnasium, the Volksschule (elementary school) and a kindergarten, were established in May 1946. They came under the Board of Governers for Culture and Education at the Central Committee of the Liberated Jews in the US Zone. Priority was given to emigration to Palestine, later Israel, and so Hebrew was the predominate classroom language. Jewish religion and history as well the geography and culture of Palestine, later Israel, were also on the curriculum. In addition, however, teaching was in line with the German curriculum. In 1951, the institutions were closed due to the sharp decline in the number of students.
When the Hebrew Gymnasium with its associated Volksschule (elementary school) and kindergarten, opened its doors in May 1946, it represented a first step toward DP children being given an education. A special feature of these schools was the heterogeneous constellation of children and youths. Due to the individual fates suffered as a result of persecution, different age groups were taught in each class. There was also great linguistic diversity among the students, so that Hebrew became indeed a unifying element for all. By the time of its closure in 1951, a large number of the children and teachers had emigrated. However, very few of them went to Israel, but left Munich instead for the USA, Australia or other European countries.
